Shalane Flanagan

Superstar distance runner Shalane Flanagan currently holds the American record for the 3,000 meter (indoor), 5,000 meter (indoor) and 10,000 meter (outdoor). Her aggressive and fearless running style has helped to reestablish American women's distance running on the world stage. She won a bronze medal in the 10,000 meter at the 2008 Sydney Olympic Games and in doing so broke her own American record. She is only the second American woman to receive a medal in 10,000-meter Olympic competition. Flanagan won her first half marathon at the 2010 USA Half Marathon Championships with a course record of 1:09:45. In her debut at the 2010 New York City Marathon, Flanagan finished second with a time of 2:28:40, the fastest course time for an American woman in 20 years. At the 2011 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, Flanagan placed third with a time of 25:10, helping lead Team USA to a bronze medal and becoming the first non-African-born medalist in the event since 2004. Flanagan also competed on the U.S. team at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
