1965
With their players suffering in the blistering heat, florida gators coaches sought the help of university doctors who found players weren’t replacing the fluids and electrolytes they lost in sweat. Their solution — a new drink that not only helped the gators reach their first major bowl game but also changed sports forever.
HE SAID IT
Following the Gator’s first-ever Orange Bowl win, the opposing coach told reporters, "We didn’t have Gatorade. That made the difference."
FLAVOR, PLEASE
According to players, the first edition of Gatorade tasted rather foul. So at the suggestion of one of the doctors’ wives, lemon juice was added to make it more palatable.
NAME GAME
Before it was named Gatorade, it was known as "Cade’s Aid" or "Cade’s Cola" after one of the inventing doctors, Dr. Robert Cade.
