Meet the Scientists

John R. Stofan

MS, Principal Scientist, GSSI


A member of the American College of Sports Medicine since 1989, John Stofan is an exercise scientist with interests in sports nutrition, hydration, and fluid balance. As principal scientist in the Exercise Physiology Lab at GSSI, John conducts physiology-related research in the areas of hydration, rehydration, electrolytes and fluid balance. He co-manages the athlete testing program, coordinates laboratory operations, and directs technology advancement for physiology related areas within GSSI.

A native of Connecticut, John earned his BS and MS degrees in Human Performance/Exercise Science at Southern Connecticut State University. He served as Research Fellow coordinating internal and external research in the Human Performance Laboratory at Southern before taking a Research Assistant position supporting Loretta DiPietro, PhD, MPH Gary Mack, PhD and the late Ethan R. Nadel, PhD at the John B. Pierce Laboratory at Yale University.

John has authored and co-authored several publications in scientific journals and contributed to the text Sports Drinks: Basic Science and Practical Aspects.

He participates in cycling, mountain biking, backpacking, and sea-kayaking and also has an interest in environmental medicine.
