Principal Scientist, Gatorade Sports Science Institute
Dr. Xiaocai Shi joined the GSSI in 1994 to provide scientific, educational and technical
support to the Gatorade business in Asia/Pacific. His research interests are mainly
in the area of gastric emptying and intestinal absorption of water, carbohydrates
and electrolytes.
Over the last five years, Dr. Shi has focused his efforts on gastrointestinal
research including developing a new intubation technique for intestinal perfusion,
investigating the effects of carbohydrate concentration, carbohydrate types and
osmolality on gastric emptying and intestinal absorption. In addition, Dr. Shi has
worked with other scientists for many scientific research projects in the areas
of carbohydrate metabolism, fluid absorption, cardiovascular responses in elderly
people during daily exercise, dehydration and blood DNA damage and effect of fluid
replacement on exercise performance and gastrointestinal distress etc. in Asia/Pacific
region.
Dr. Shi is actively involved in many scientific conferences in Asia/Pacific
and has made numerous presentations in the areas of hydration, fluid replacement,
temperature regulation, carbohydrate metabolism & oxidation, and intestinal
absorption of carbohydrates, fluids and electrolytes in many Asian countries.
Dr.
Shi obtained his bachelor’s degree from Shanghai Teacher’s University in 1982, his
master’s degree from Ball State University in 1990, and his PhD from the University
of Iowa in 1994.
He is currently an associate editor of Chinese Journal of Sports
Medicine and a guest professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai Physical
Education Institute and South China Normal University. Dr Shi is a fellow of American
